Project Summary

ATM was selected in March 1998 to provide professional design/engineering services to the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resources Management for the renourishment of the 6000 ft long federal project immediately south of Jupiter Inlet. The initial project restoration was completed in April 1995, with approximately 600,000 cubic yards of sand excavated from the ebb tidal shoal of Jupiter Inlet and placed onto the shoreline.

Services performed by ATM for this initial renourishment included borrow area sediment sample compositing, investigation of an additional sand resource area, design of the beachfill template, and preparation of contract documents. Bidding and construction phase services were also provided. The geotechnical investigation was completed in July 1999 during which detailed bathymetric data was collected concurrent with seismic and side-scan sonar instrumentation tows. Following processing of the geophysical data, thirty-two vibracores were collected, allowing ATM coastal engineers to develop area of influence computations to determine composite characteristics of the potential borrow areas. This data was applied in the development of a beachfill template to optimize sand placement on the project shoreline. Sufficient sand quantities were identified to support both the Jupiter/Carlin Renourishment and the Juno Beach Shore Protection Project. The latter of which was constructed by Palm Beach County in March 2000.

ATM coastal engineers were asked to provide a dune component to the project plans to offset severe erosion of the existing vegetated dunes in the project area. Construction contract documents were completed in June 2001 to support bid solicitation in July 2001. Project construction was accomplished between December 2001 and April 2002, during which approximately 56,000 cubic yards of sand were placed. ATM provided review of contractor pay profile survey data, computed template volumes, and made recommendations for payment.
