ATM provided technical assistance to the Town of Mount Pleasant in lengthy dialogue with the USACE Charleston District to adjust its placement location of dredged material for the Crab Bank Restoration project, which is sponsored by SCDNR. ATM appreciates the opportunity to serve as the Town’s coastal engineering advisor during the negotiations in which our numerical modeling indicated that placement of the dredged material could occur further away from the mouth of Shem Creek for less deleterious effect and better performance while not impairing the scale or features of the habitat creation. As indicated in the joint press release issued on April 15, 2021, the footprint adjustment is a win for the Town, USACE and SCDNR. When finished, the project will create approximately 28 acres of critical nesting habitat for highly threatened populations of shorebirds.
